Religious Education

The method for teaching the rest of the school year is all remote.  We will continue with sending assignments until 2nd week of May, 2020.

1st Communion is postponed, but the children need to complete the forms we are emailing and the assignments the teachers are giving.  Parents, please take the time to work with your child so they are ready when they do receive.

Some people brought children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and to pray for them, but the disciples scolded the people.  Jesus said, “Let the children come to me and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

Matthew 19:13-14

Welcome to St. Gabriel's Religious Education!  Our program at St. Gabriel's is focused on providing K-8 children with the opportunity to learn the history and foundation of the Catholic Church, gain a meaningful understanding of the seven sacraments, and grow in a personal relationship with God on their own faith journey.  Students are placed in grade level classes with class sizes averaging 15 students. Students are given the opportunity not only to grow as individuals, but to grow as a community with other children from the parish.  Each class is led by a volunteer catechist and assistant.  Classes meet once a week.  Recognizing parents as the primary catechists in their children's lives, the Religious Education staff provides families with the tools and coaching they need to enrich the faith growth of their children.

Children ages 5-14 who wish to receive the sacrament of Baptism may enroll in our program and will receive Baptism during the first year of classes.  Children will receive their First Reconciliation and First Communion as part of the second year.  Students must be enrolled for two consecutive years to receive these sacraments.

Families are encouraged to continue the faith formation of their children after they receive the sacrament of Holy Communion.  There is so much more to learn as they grow in their faith and continue on the journey. This will lead them into the Confirmation/Life Teen program in high school.

Classes run end of September- May and follow the Poway Unified School District calendar.

Our office is closed, but our education

continues.  Our catechists are communicating via phone and on line with the children and families.  Please continue to pray with your children as we get through this health risk crisis.

1st Communion is postponed.  As soon as the health department allows gatherings, we will schedule a new date for 1st Communion.  Regular classes held at the church are not allowed.  So, we will continue to send assignments via email.

Give me a call if you have questions.

Children's Liturgy of the Word - suspended at this time

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a program for children in Kindergarten through 4th grade which takes place during the Sunday 9:30 am Mass. The children process out of mass with trained adult volunteers and go to the RCIA room off the church courtyard to listen to the Liturgy of the Word at their level. The volunteer shares some thoughts on the reading. After the creed and prayers of the faithful, the children process back into church to join their families for the remainder of the Mass. For children who are unsure about coming, the parents are always welcome to join them. No signups required to participate.  If you would like to volunteer as a leader/assistant or would like more information, contact Elaine Wealch at 858-486-0036.
