What is OCIA?

OCIA (the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) is an encounter with the Resurrected Christ.  It is designed for adults ages 18+ who are searching for a deeper connection with Christ through the Catholic faith. OCIA is the process by which an adult becomes Catholic or completes their Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion).

How does OCIA work?

There are 4 stages of the journey:

INQUIRY

The period of inquiry is a time of exploration.  This is your

time to ask questions about Catholicism or religion and

spirituality in general. It is a time of introduction to the

Gospel of Jesus Christ and a time of reflection on your

own life.

CATECHUMENATE

If you decide to pursue the process of becoming Catholic,

you would then enter the catechumenate.  The

catechumens, along with their godparent or sponsor,

continue to study and ponder the Scriptures and the

teachings of the Church.  Through prayer, learning and

coming to know other Catholic Christians, you will encounter the love and power of God in your life and in the Church.

PURIFICATION & ENLIGHTENMENT

The period of purification and enlightenment is a season of more intense preparation for initiation into the Catholic Church.  This usually coincides with the Church season of Lent.  During this period, the catechumens, now referred to as the elect, and the parish community together focus on conversion, scrutinize their lives in light of the Gospel, and celebrate the presentations of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer.

MYSTAGOGY

Mystagogy is the final period of initiation during which the newly initiated members of the Catholic Church, after having received their sacraments, experience being a part of the Christian community.

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is truly a spiritual journey that will allow you to enter into a deeper relationship with our Lord as you continue your personal journey.
